Discover a local favorite on the outskirts of North Park
Sea Rocket Bistro is a place I’d heard about for a long time but never tried because I was afraid it would be too far out of my price range.
With plates ranging from $10-20, it’s actually not too bad, especially when you consider that everything is locally sourced and organic. To fit with every budget, they also have a daily happy hour that rotates between things like $1 oysters, $10 grass-fed burgers and discounted draft brews.
After tasting their food for myself, I can see this being a place that I’ll crave and enjoy every penny I spend. The food makes the tummy feel good and, knowing that I’m supporting local farmers and fishermen, makes it feel even better.
The ambience is quaint and eclectic, with decorations made from repurposed packaging materials hanging from the ceiling. Flat screen TV’s play on a loop, showcasing some of the places they go to source their food and compost their scraps and setting an excellent example of what a SLO (sustainable-local-organic) restaurant is all about.
The service is friendly and informal and the food is very nice. I’d call it casual gourmet.

We started out with a couple tapas as appetizers that were a very welcome substitute to bread and butter. The street tacos were good, but the real stand-out for me was the grass-fed burger. It had a perfect combination of sweet and savory. I was also in heaven because they have my all-time favorite beer: Airdale Dark and Stormy.
Our meal was finished off with a not-overly-rich cake a la mode that combined a perfect mix of exotic flavors: chocolate, coconut, macadamia nut and passion fruit.
